Coalville

North West Leicestershire’s  administrative centre and largest town. Coalville grew out of the mining industry. The mines closed during the 1980’s, resulting in the regeneration on an impressive scale with trees, woodlands, nature reserves, business centres and light industry replacing the mines and pits. Snibston Discovery Park is on the site of Snibston Colliery.

Coalville was originally known as Long Lane, a country track extending from Hoo Ash to Bardon housing fewer than 100 people. Coach travellers on the Ravenstone turnpike between Ashby and Leicester knew nothing of it’s existence; even local maps ignored it. Then in 1824, local mining engineer William Stenson started to sink a coal mine alongside Long Lane. Having seen the new Stockton and Darlington railway, he recognised the potential of this revolutionary method of transport and formed the Leicester and Swannington Railway Company. He contacted George Stephenson, who invested £2500 in the company. Stephenson’s son Robert was appointed the railways engineer. The first part of the line opened in 1832. In 1833, the Stephenson’s sank their first mine with introduced labour from Durham, it was around the mines and railway that a small community grew to form Coalville. By 1838 , the town’s population had increased to over 1200 with houses, a school, a church, parsonage and non-conformist chapel. The name Coalville is believed to originate from Stenson’s home “Coalville House” Noted residents include George Smith, a prominent Victorian social reformer who worked to improve conditions for children employed in the brickyards. His efforts did not endear him to other locals connected with the clay industry and his effigy was burned in the streets.  The grave of William Bees VC can be found in London Road Cemetery, he was awarded the honour in 1901 during the Boer War.

The Towns central feature is the Memorial Clock Tower, which commemorates the dead of both world Wars.

With everything from a local market, niche shops and divine restaurants there is something in Coalville for all to enjoy.
