Originally “Durandesthorp” the village is probably of Danish origin and was mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The Church of St John the Evangalist was erected and endowed in 1838 principally by the Misses Moor, aided by a grant from the Incorporated society, and a contribution from the Marquis of Hastings. It consists of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower surmounted by pinnacles, and containing a clock and 1 bell.
Donisthorpe Woodland Park was formerly a deep coal mine now developed into a woodland with trails for walker, cyclists, horse riders and disabled visitors, and is part of the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail. A stretch of the Ashby Canal runs from Donisthorpe to Moira. Nearby Willesley Wood was one of the first National forest planting sites and its 100 acres now provide an attractive area for walks along circular trails, includes mature woodland , lake and meadows.
